The only downside to visiting Mauna Kea is that it’s very high up—nearly 14,000 feet above sea level! As such, visitors need to acclimatize themselves before taking part in any stargazing adventures here. Be sure to plan ahead by bringing plenty of water and snacks as well as warm clothes because temperatures can drop considerably at night even during summer months. From my experience, it might be wise to stay overnight instead of driving back down after dark since driving at such a high altitude can be dangerous if you’re not used to it .

Plus, there are several trails around these campgrounds perfect for day hikes or evening strolls where you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some wildlife like deer or elk.
